One of the unique things we do at Resaca Sun Feeds is offer seasonal layer feeds. We do this because a hen’s nutrient needs during our hot, humid temperatures are different from her needs during cooler temperatures. The high temperature layer feeds (this includes corn & soy free and corn & soy based) is available starting on May 1st and will be the stock layer feed until September 30th.

What’s different about our summer formulas compared to the winter formulas?

To start, summer formulas are higher in protein and lower in energy. When the temperatures are hot (above 85⁰F + humidity), chickens will decrease their average feed consumption from 0.28-0.30 lbs. per day down to 0.20-0.25 lbs. per day. This decrease in feed intake will result in hens not getting enough protein to support lay rate. So, we increase the protein in the summer layer to 20% crude protein and increase essential amino acids like methionine, lysine, and threonine.
The decrease in feed intake during hotter temperatures is typically because hens need less energy to maintain metabolic function. In addition to changing the protein, fat and energy levels are decreased in the summer layer formulas. The winter formula averages 5.8% fat, and fat is decreased to 5.3% in the summer formula. Because fat is a main energy source, energy levels are reduced by 50 kcal/lb.

Lastly, extra electrolytes are added to our summer layer formulas. When it’s hot, chickens pant, which releases moisture and carbon dioxide. This release can change the acid-base balance in poultry and limit the bicarbonate that is available for forming eggshells. Sodium bicarbonate is added to our summer formulas to help lessen these problems and provide extra electrolytes.

As a final note to end on, do not forget the importance of water. Water intake will determine feed intake. If a hen is not drinking water, she is not eating feed. This will cause a dramatic reduction in lay rate! If watering from an IBC tote, the tote needs to be free from algae and keep the tote out of the sun. Hens will not drink water hotter than 85⁰F. Water provided to hens needs to be cool, clean, and fresh.
